Some people wished their youth would last;
Some people wish their youth would last,
while I indeed long for my gray hair to come swiftly.
While I love to hasten my greyness,

أخافُ على نفسي العثار لأنني

رأيت الشباب الغضّ ريناً على القلب
I fear that I may stumble, for
I fear for myself missteps, for I
I have seen tender youth as a stain upon the heart.
Saw tender youth a gardener of the heart,

I'm not content for my youth
to be my heart’s quarry if I weep over my sin.
To be the prey of my heart if I weep for my sin,

ليرحل محمودا فيمنعني صحبى
I am minded to reproach youth and condemn it;
I care to blame youth and dispraise it
so that it may depart praised, my companions restrain me.
So it may depart praised, and my company prevent me,

فشرّدَ من نومي وضاعف من كربى
Let me revile a friend who drove me astray,
Let me complain emptily to the passion which led me
and robbed me of sleep and doubled my distress.
And scattered my sleep and doubled my worries,

Enough for me that I am still stricken with fear:
It's enough for me that I remain frightened
I spend the night in worry and begin the morning in discontent.
Spending the night in anxiety and waking in vexation,

My soul was not like souls who long
youth’s folly amid wine and drinking companions;
For the foolishness of youth between wine and drinking,

But it is a soul that yearns for heights
as circling, thirst-crazed camels long for cool, sweet water.
With the yearning of doves moaning for fresh bosoms.
