A likeness of you, if it wished, would say
If an image of you wished to speak
That it is my likeness, for you are my beloved.
It would say that it is my image, for you are my beloved

The smiles of love in it are my smiles,
The smiles of passion have my smiles
And the sobbing of passion in it is my sobbing.
And the wailing of love contains my wailing

I drink delicious honey from its dusky lips,
I drink the honey from its mouth eagerly
And so I heal my wounds and my scars.
To cure my wounds and scars

Indeed, I have dealt your heart a wound
I have wounded your heart with a wound
That is the sweetest of my sins and transgressions.
More beloved than my sins and wrongdoings

An unfettered leap, to which it is a trifle
A free leap that makes it easy
For the ailing one to bite the physician's face.
For the sick to bite the face of the healer

O ailing one whose cure lies in his own hands,
Oh my patient, whose cure is in his hands
If he feeds on my tears and my perfumes.
If he feeds on my tears and fragrance

O my ailing one, come; indeed I am ill.
Oh my patient, come for I am sick
My sides have drawn away from the bed.
My bed has lost its warmth

I spend the night and day in sleeplessness.
I spend the night and day sleepless
What does passion gain from tormenting me?
How sweet is the singing of my love's torment

I have sung the inspiration of your beauty, so listen:
I sang the revelation of your beauty so listen
A stranger may console a stranger's soul.
The stranger may console the soul of a stranger

If you die, do not die, for the inspiration of our love
If you die you do not die, for the revelation is disgrace
Is the inspiration of life, the inspiration of hearts.
It is the revelation of life and hearts
