من لوعة الحافظ الأمين
You forgot the pledge and found repose,
You forgot the pledge and found rest
free of the anguish of a faithful lover who kept it.
From the anguish of its faithful keeper.

أراح بعد النوى جفوني
If only what soothed you and let you sleep
Would that what tamed you and let you sleep
had given my eyelids rest after separation.
Had given my eyelids rest after parting.

If only, when I despaired of you,
And would that, when I despaired of you,
I had curbed my sorrows in my estrangement.
I had curbed my sorrows in my exile.

The deceit of wishes has passed; stilled now are
The deceit of hopes has vanished, and stilled are

لم تقض في حبه ديوني
What use is my weeping for a beloved?
Why, then, do I weep for a beloved
It has not paid the debts I owe to loving him.
In whose love my debts were never settled?

the playgrounds of recklessness and madness.
The playgrounds of recklessness and madness.

Yet I tasted nothing of his fruit
nothing but the echo of wailing and moaning.
But the echo of wailing and moaning.

Feign forgetfulness as you please; it will die down—
the heat of tears upon the eyelids.
The heat of tears in the tear ducts.

the wonders of enchantment in the eyes.
The marvels of enchantment in the eyes.

My longing, despite sorrow's vicissitudes.
