You wrestle, in beauty's peace and war,

with dangers, some new and some age-old.

Ah, what a lovesick soul you are, still ardent despite parting,

whose sorrow eyes and cheeks have stirred.

Be sensible; do not despair: many a passion

the heart has left behind, though stricken with love.

The Nile's maidens will heal the scars of the wrong

the Seine's maidens did you, when you return.

May God guard, in the cherished valley, a noble woman

for whom it is painful to hear, 'He is far away.'

The late afternoons remind her of what passed between us,

and so her arms and breasts tremble.

I wronged her as I did through love,

and left her wasting away in sorrow, perishing.

And how many hopes of youth have been shattered—

their twisted cords and knots snapped by their misfortunes!

Will summer nights pass, burning longing unquenched

by smiling mouths that lavish sweet, wholesome water?

And will there walk along its morning path, sorrowful and thirsty,

a heart swaying beneath the burdens of grief?

And will the Nile's haunts be empty of a reckless man's revelry,

for whom its hills hold paradise and immortality?

And will there live, captive to sorrow in youth's bloom,

a merry young man, brimming with youthful vigor, defiant?

Those who forget me will remember me the day they are pricked

by the black traits of certain people.

Those who forget me will remember me when they are startled

by kind deeds, witnesses from the memory of my love.

For, by God, I have never surrendered my pledge to treachery,

nor has ingratitude tainted my soul in love.

Nor have those who forget me witnessed any offense of mine

against love, save that I should be called a martyr.
