I have lost—and lost nothing but a friend,
I have lost nought save a dear friend,
Dearer to me than my prose and poetry.
More precious to me than my verse or prose.

A man of letters who was like purified honey,
A man of letters sweet as purest honey,
And stronger in intellect than al-Ma'arri.
His talent stronger than Al-Mutanabbi's.

His world wronged him however it wished,
Whatever worldly goods he wished were his.
So he repaid it with a virgin melody of his own.
He paid no heed to slander or applause.

فماso not يسموrises إليهto him أيّany صهرin-law
He lived without a wife; no bride shared his dwelling,
A bride mourns with no relief in sight,
So no in-law could rise to his level.
No brother-in-law to whom her love might turn.

For him the world held lovely gifts galore -
Marvels of bottles and wine,
Fine wines and verse in plenty and to spare,

A song made up of charming lyrics, so
So say what you will of art and magic.
Say what you will of art and magic there.

He was my friend—oh, my sorrow for him,
Gone is my friend and I lament his loss,
For one fashioned from goodness and purity.
His gentleness and virtue bereft from us.

Dear Ibrahim is dead but I still cry
Disbelieve each day what is said.

I carried the bier, seeking inspiration from its blaze,
I helped carry him though my soul complained
And I ask: what is the place of return, and what the final fate?
And wondered at his state when life has fled

Peerless, with no equal to be found.
None can compare or take your special role

Your voice in song would fill my heart with joy
And awaken longing in the depths of my heart.
And stir the ecstasy in my inner core

A generous youth, joyous in spirit, cheerful,
Gentle-souled youth, delighted spirit at peace
I almost think him one of my melodies.
I could even think you were part of my refrain
