The world's allure and adornment have not made me forget

the enchantments in your radiant character.

I roam amid beauty, its marvels captivating me,

as one heartsick with love roams among the ruins of dwellings.

So its haunts and freshness stir nothing,

in the shadow of your memory, but anxiety and sorrow.

I believed in love; but for you, there would have been no headlong surge

of my breast's longings toward family or homeland.

O you who leave me bewildered—I do not know whether I am gladdened

by love for you, or whether passion for you is the ordeal of ordeals.

What harm would it have done if my eyes had rejoiced or suffered

before parting, at the sight of your beautiful face?

Were it not for your likeness, which I glimpse in Paris

in the full moon's face or in a bough's freshness,

sleep would not have clasped my eyelids, nor could my ribs have borne

    the sorrow that separation stirred.

    The nights have dealt me harm, yet not unjustly;

I indeed deserve what my days bring me.

So never have I seen an onslaught of dangers

without building my dwelling in their midst.

Nor have I glimpsed a flash of hope

without plunging headlong through whatever boughs it crosses.

    I have turned my world into a meaning that knows no rest;

glory must answer for all the slumber I have banished.
