I stood confiding my plight to the bridge, but I was
I stood lamenting at the bridge, nothing but
Only one breathing into a deaf, speckled serpent’s ear.
A whisper in the ear of a deaf, barren old hag.
وقفتI stood أرجّيهI place my hope in it ولمand ... not أدرI knew أننيthat I

I stood placing my hope in it, not knowing that I
I stood imploring it, not knowing I was but
Was writing my dreams on the water’s broad surface.
Inscribing my dreams upon the froth of water.

Where does this gold flow, while around it
To where does this soil flow, and around it
Lie burning tracts of land, barren despite the water?
Fires from a land scorched and parched with drought?

Answer me, O rain of the morning clouds, for I,
Answer me, O Euphrates, for I am but
Despite my ailment, am a healer of ills in this world.
Sickly in this life, plagued by ills.

You flowed down proudly, yet did not enrich a nation
I strutted proudly, but no nation was deceived
That, after long drought, longs for the scant water of pools.
By longing for rain in prolonged drought.

Those gone before wept around you for an age; did they find
The departed cried around you for an age - did they
In your clamorous waves a moment of listening?
Ever see in your wave a moment’s attention?

Iraq complains of drought, and I seek
My share, but found with you no quenching of thirst.
My share, but find with you no irrigation.

Do you, O Euphrates, convey a greeting
For people on your two banks, withered and emaciated?
To people on your banks, healthy and vigorous?

You foolishly flow to the turbulent sea,
Despite the yearning of loving folk in Iraq.
While your people in Iraq suffer pain.

Your father, the clouds of rain, is generous;
In every soft, level tract in the two Iraqs.
His rain comforts every land in both Iraqs.

So from whom did you learn stinginess, O neighbor of youths?
Who are a river flowing through a pebbly valley’s heart?
They are the flowing Euphrates in the belly of the plain.

The flowers complained of your banks, so be ashamed and save them
From tyrannous thirst and from the water-snake.
From oppressive thirst and the serpent of water.

So let me blame you, for I am but
Nothing but a poet embroidering praise and blame.
A poet of praise, blame, and poetry.

Are you the one whose thirst is quenched to seethe

In a bay by the shore, raging?

We stood on your two banks, lamenting our burning thirst
We stood on your banks complaining of our misfortune
To the tones of the frame drum, the oud, and the reed flute.
To the beats of tambourine, lute, and flute.
