هر فأبدى لنا الجفا والملاما

O mocker whom Time has deceived,

O you who mocks, deceived by fate

who has thus shown us coldness and reproach,

Showing us grudge and blame

أخفض الصوت وارفع الحق وار

حم من تولّيت واحذر الأياما

حم من تولّيت واحذر الأياما

Lower your voice, raise up justice, and have

Lower your voice, uphold the truth

mercy on those you govern, and beware the days.

And have mercy on those you lead, beware of days

وانظر الشعب تغرس الحب

وانظر الشعب تغرس الحب

لتجني من غرسك الأعظاما

لتجني من غرسك الأعظاما

And look upon the people, sowing love,

Look at the people planting love

to reap esteem from what you plant.

To reap from your planting greatness

وتجنّب الشعب تغرس الحب

وتجنّب الشعب تغرس الحب

لتجني من غرسك الأعظاما

لتجني من غرسك الأعظاما

And shun the people, sowing love,

And avoid the people planting love

to reap esteem from what you plant.

To reap from your planting greatness

واقطع الأرض بالسياحة تعرف

واقطع الأرض بالسياحة تعرف

أمماً طار صيتها وترامى

أمماً طار صيتها وترامى

And traverse the earth through travel; you will come to know

And travel the land to know

nations whose renown has flown far and wide.

Nations whose fame has spread

كم ملوكٍ على ممالك حقّ

كم ملوكٍ على ممالك حقّ

أنت من دونهم علا ومقاما

أنت من دونهم علا ومقاما

How many kings rule kingdoms of justice—

How many kings of kingdoms

you stand below them in eminence and rank.

You are below them in rank and status

وتأملّ كم في العواصم من آياتِ

وتأملّ كم في العواصم من آياتِ

حقٍّ زَهَت سناً ونظاما

حقٍّ زَهَت سناً ونظاما

And ponder how many signs there are in the capitals

And consider how many signs of truth

of truth, radiant in brilliance and order,

In capitals have adorned years and system

وعلوم تدنيك من زهرة الدنيا

وعلوم تدنيك من زهرة الدنيا

وتمحو من قلبك الآثاما

وتمحو من قلبك الآثاما

and sciences that bring you near the world's bloom,

And knowledge that brings you closer to life's prime

and erase the sins from your heart.

And erases misdeeds from your heart

ودع الحمق والجنون الذي تخطر

ودع الحمق والجنون الذي تخطر

فيه لمن يسوس اللئاما

فيه لمن يسوس اللئاما

And leave the folly and madness in which you strut

And leave foolishness and madness

to whoever governs the ignoble.

In which vile thoughts occur

لست بالمجد في الحقيقة كلا

لست بالمجد في الحقيقة كلا

إنما المجد أن تسير أماما

إنما المجد أن تسير أماما

In truth, you are not glorious—no!

You are not truly glorious

Glory lies only in moving forward,

Glory is to walk ahead

وترى شعبك الكريم بعين

وترى شعبك الكريم بعين

وفؤاد تجني رضى واحتراما

وفؤاد تجني رضى واحتراما

and regarding your noble people with an eye

And see your noble people with

and a heart—you will reap goodwill and respect—

A heart and soul that reaps satisfaction and respect

لا بسخط ولا بعين احتقار

لا بسخط ولا بعين احتقار

ليس شاء كلا ولا أنعاما

ليس شاء كلا ولا أنعاما

not with resentment, nor with an eye of contempt.

Not with discontent or eyes of disdain

They are not sheep—no—nor livestock.

Neither willed or bestowed gifts

كم رأيناك في شبابك تغلو

كم رأيناك في شبابك تغلو

فوق حر وتستشيط اضطراما

فوق حر وتستشيط اضطراما

How often, in your youth, we saw you go to excess,

How often we saw you in your youth

lording it over a free man and blazing with fury.

Vehement over injustice, kindling with fervor

ثم تصليه من عقابك ناراً

ثم تصليه من عقابك ناراً

حين يلقي اليك واشٍ كلاما

حين يلقي اليك واشٍ كلاما

Then you scorch him with the fire of your punishment,

Then you pardon it with your punishment, fire

when a slanderer brings words to you.

When it casts at you but words

أيها الشعب غافل أنت عنه

أيها الشعب غافل أنت عنه

وبسوء العذاب إيّاك ساما

وبسوء العذاب إيّاك ساما

O people, you are heedless of him,

O oblivious people, you are heedless of it

and he has subjected you to grievous torment.

And evil torment, beware

أم ترجّي فيه السعادة والمجد

أم ترجّي فيه السعادة والمجد

فقل لي متى تنال المراما

فقل لي متى تنال المراما

Or do you hope for happiness and glory in him?

Or do you hope for its happiness and glory

Then tell me: when will you attain your aim?

Tell me then, when will you attain your wishes

هل ملأتم وهادها ورباها

هل ملأتم وهادها ورباها

زرعها المثمر الوحيد انتظاما

زرعها المثمر الوحيد انتظاما

Have you filled its lowlands and its hills

Have you filled it and settled it

with its sole fruitful crop, in orderly fashion?

And raised its sole fruitful crop, order?

هل مددتم مواصلات الأماني

هل مددتم مواصلات الأماني

نافذات عراقها والشآما

نافذات عراقها والشآما

Have you extended the transport links of hope,

Have you extended transport for aspirations

reaching through its Iraq and al-Sham?

Windows to its Iraq and Levant

هل بنيتم لها المدارس تنشي

هل بنيتم لها المدارس تنشي

أمة تعرف الحياة تماما

أمة تعرف الحياة تماما

Have you built schools for it that nurture

Have you built schools to raise

a nation that knows life fully?

A nation wholly knowing life?

وبعثتم على العواصم بعثا

وبعثتم على العواصم بعثا

يدرس العلم والفنون الجساما

يدرس العلم والفنون الجساما

And sent a mission to the capitals

And sent to capitals a mission

to study science and the great arts?

To study science and monumental arts
