He feared falling so he took to destroying,
A king who lives on spilled blood.
A king who lives on spilled blood.

He feared downfall, so he set about securing his rule
He feared falling so he set about establishing his kingdom,
With the sword, shackles, and torture.
With swords, shackles and torture.

He filled the prisons and poured out every kind of affliction,
He filled the prisons and poured all kinds of tribulations,
Yet he wants a throne thronged with hearts.
Yet he wants a throne crowded with hearts.

He turned affairs over, their undersides uppermost,
He turned matters upside down to reveal them,
Yet he wants a kingdom that is not overturned.
Yet he wants a kingdom that is not overturned.

They were, though they have risen to wage wars.
When they had risen up to wage wars.

He implores fate to have mercy on his weakness,
And restore a glory untouched by calamity.
And give him glory that is not ruined.

This is impossibility itself:
This is the impossible matter itself!
Can a sun shine when it has sunk toward sunset?
Can a sun that has set for the sunset shine?

أخطأت لكن ذاك شأن الشيب
Imam Yahya, though you are the most cautious ruler,
O precious poet of Yemen, have patience,
You erred, but such is the way of gray hair.
Patience is the lot of every outcast.

And the marvels of ninety—hideous as they are—
Do not fret even if you are struck by disaster,
Have led the riding camels of estrangement to you.
Calamity has shaken the throne of glory.

ضعف المشيب ووحدة التغريب
Two foes have attacked you with force:
The wicked one destroyed the house while he was confused,
The frailty of old age and the loneliness of estrangement.
By what you provoked with your threat.

عاديت يا يحيى بني التهذيب
You did not seek help from the loyal; instead,
You disturbed his sleep so he sent an army,
You opposed, O Yahya, the sons of refinement.
To cure him with the horror of destruction.

وعقرت أمَّ العُرب عقر النيب
And exposed your cherished nation to misery,
Or his soul suggested to him that you were under it,
And hamstrung the mother of the Arabs as old she-camels are hamstrung.
So he went searching for you like a robbed man.

إنّ التصبُّر حظُّ كلّ أريب
O dear poet of Yemen, be patient;
Or he thought he had killed you by destroying it,
Indeed, patient endurance is the lot of every wise person.
Yet here you are, living a life of lamenting.

جلل فقد زلزلتّ عرش الحوب
Do not grow impatient, even if struck by a crushing blow,
You robbed him of thought until he,
A grave calamity, for you have shaken the throne of sin.
Forgot blame and the sting of reproach.

The sinner crushed the house, distraught
He forgot manliness when desire overwhelmed him,
By the terror you had unleashed.
So he quenched his wrath as you can see with ruin.

يشفونه بفظيعة التخريب
You disturbed his sleep, so he sent an army
His hands demolished the eminent house,
To heal him with the atrocity of destruction.
While religion was held back from it with a stick.

Or his soul told him that you were beneath it,
The soldiers beat the devotees when they defended it,
So he went searching for you like a man bereft.
And what was plundered from it.

Or he thought your death lay in demolishing it,
And so it was for us, but all of it
And behold, through it you live a life of lamentation.
Is easy compared to the beloved homeland.

Forgot reproach and the sting of rebuke.

So he quenched his burning thirst, as you see, with calamities.
From which the world took the perfect share.

His hands demolished the house, though it was grand,
We have vowed that you will succeed
And religion is held back from it with a rod.
And your matter will be fulfilled, despite every doubter.
