النوح لا يشفي الفؤاد

والشَق من دون المراد

Wailing does not heal the heart,

And rending garments falls short of the aim.

لا يشتفي القلب المصاب

بما عدا وخز الصعاد

The stricken heart finds no healing

In anything but the thrusts of spears.

ـلٍ مات في هذي البلاد

ـلٍ مات في هذي البلاد

Al-Shumayri has died, the finest middle-aged

Man to die in this land.

رجل الديانة والحقيقة

والمروءة والرشاد

A man of religious devotion and truth,

And chivalry and right guidance;

والعالم الثبت المحقق

والعالم الثبت المحقق

والضليع بكل واد

والضليع بكل واد

And a scholar, reliable and rigorous,

And deeply versed in every valley of learning;

والصادق النفثات والـ

والصادق النفثات والـ

ـحسن السجيّة والقياد

ـحسن السجيّة والقياد

And truthful in what he breathes forth, and

Of fine character and leadership.

يدنيك إن وافت يد

يدنيك إن وافت يد

مما تروم من الأياد

مما تروم من الأياد

He brings you closer, if a hand comes forth,

To the favors you seek.

ويفيض أي بشاشة

ويفيض أي بشاشة

ويريك خاتمة الجواد

ويريك خاتمة الجواد

And he overflows with such cheerfulness,

And shows you the last word in generosity.

ويقوم مهما غبت بالفرض

ويقوم مهما غبت بالفرض

الذي لك في النهاد

الذي لك في النهاد

And whenever you are absent, he fulfills the duty

He owes you within his heart.

ويريك إنسانية

منظورها يشفي الفؤاد

منظورها يشفي الفؤاد

And he shows you humanity

Whose very sight heals the heart.

ويهبّ من ضجعاته

ويهبّ من ضجعاته

للناشئات كما يراد

للناشئات كما يراد

And he springs up from his repose

To meet emerging needs as desired.

ويسير في طلب العلوم

ويسير في طلب العلوم

بزاده وبغير زاد

بزاده وبغير زاد

And he travels in pursuit of knowledge,

With his provisions or with none.

ويناقش النّبغاء في

ما دونه خرط القتاد

And he debates the brilliant on

Matters harder than stripping thorns from a thornbush.

ويجدّ في طلب العلا

ويجدّ في طلب العلا

ويطيل في الخير السهاد

ويطيل في الخير السهاد

And he strives in pursuit of eminence,

And keeps long vigils in doing good.

وإذا تكلم فالوقا

وإذا تكلم فالوقا

رُ هناك وَالقول السداد

رُ هناك وَالقول السداد

And when he speaks, dignity

Is there, and words of sound judgment.

وإذا ادار أمور دنيا

وإذا ادار أمور دنيا

فمن رشد وهاد

فمن رشد وهاد

And when he manages worldly affairs,

He acts with sound judgment and guidance.

ويروع مبتدع القبيح

ويروع مبتدع القبيح

فلا قبيح ولا فساد

فلا قبيح ولا فساد

And he strikes fear into the deviser of evil,

So there is neither evil nor corruption.
