God is greatest! You rose among us as a warner,

    Rebuking, appealing, and reminding.

You stayed for days in Sana'a, crying out,

And sincerely advising the Muslims; so repeat it:

O noble nation of Yemen, these are

The fangs of the sons of the Franks and Caesar.

You made the imam and others in Sana'a hear

That verse, and what you heard and what you see.

You delivered pure counsel, O sincere one,

And striver who followed the most radiant path.

Therefore I speak, appreciating the counsel of the noble,

Zealous man, with thanks and affirmation:

Rule by consultation fell, lay dead, and was laid

Beneath the layers of earth, dear friend.

And justice throughout the land, as you see,

Lies among the people, wrapped and shrouded.

Justice is the foundation of rule and judgments,

And of the world's flourishing and the increase of wealth.

The people are truly resentful, and some of them

Sleep, while others have their bonds severed.

You see the Muslims' alms and what the public

Treasury holds in every city and village,

Gathered up, withheld from every proper use.

And if a heart saw it, it would break apart.

How many a poor, meek believer,

    And wretched widows left naked,

And the wayfarer, the debtor, the fighter,

And one whose heart is to be won—all are cast into the open.

And a fighter this year has returned

After fighting for days and months.

You see him obliged to repay what

The imam or prince paid him in coins.

He repays the cost of his food from his own home,

Though he is poor and now burns with anguish.

And the princes' own trading with the public

Treasury's wealth has never been condemned.

How many injustices arise from taking hostages,

    Nearly setting bodies ablaze!

Consider the causes of Tihamah's revolt

    This year, reflecting and pondering.

God is greatest! What warning, what awakening

Do you seek that is sterner than what has happened?

You see the imam saying in a poem:

He has grown used to sleeplessness and forsaken sweet sleep.

And I must do what I can, calling

To the people: God, O my people, has purchased...

If you do not come forward with your lives, you have taken on

A somewhat easier share of the duty to spend.

The people's condition has come to say:

The game—all the game—is in the wild ass's belly.

God is greatest! How have our people become

Like Saba's scattered bands, divided and despised?

And perhaps, perhaps, the deaf will hear the counsel

Of a zealous man who rose among them as a warner.

And perhaps you will see them listening to a counselor

Who never strayed from clarity or fabricated lies.

If they insist on nothing but sophistry, the simplest

Course I see is: publish a green book.

Publish a black book; publish a book

Of red; publish a dust-gray book.

And through them explain to the Muslims their deeds,

Their words, their hoards, and jewels,

And that these—their estates and their belongings,

Their mounts, their horses, and the motorcar,

Their mules, their camels, and their weapons,

Their clothing, their valuables, and yellow gold,

And green gardens and all their houses—

Come from the Muslims' treasury, beyond dispute.

Their food is the very alms, although it

Was forbidden to the Messenger's household, beyond dispute.

And 'Kakh! Kakh!' was Taha's rebuke to his son

Over a date from the alms, O discerning one.

So publish all the facts and fine details

Of this and that, recording and affirming them,

Seeking help from the Muslims, calling

To the doers of good, proclaiming God's oneness and greatness,

Until you see the peace delegation in Sana'a itself,

Supporting the believers again and again.

    Oppression, greed, and self-conceit,

And avarice obeyed and the rest—you will not conceal them.

You see the leader, ruling by his opinion alone,

    Mocking and despising his people.

When the land's king holds his people in contempt,

He loses the land and rains clotted blood upon the earth.

God is greatest! How this oppression delights

An unbelieving colonizer poised for action!

Truth is a clear light to an opponent

And an ally alike, like dawn whenever it shines.

    Believers are truly merciful toward

One another, sharing the burden of whatever befalls.

Their affairs are by consultation, and religion is sincere counsel

For the Muslims, their ruler and an appointed commander.

And perhaps fate will outpace the chronicler,

And you will see a day of warning at the gates.
