لَأَنthough فُجِّعتُI was bereaved بِالقُرَباءِof close kin مِنّىof mine
لَقَدindeed مُتِّعتُI was granted enjoyment بِالأَمَلِof hope البَعيدِfar-reaching
Though I have been bereaved of those close to me,
For I have been aggrieved by the loss of loved ones,
I have indeed been granted far-reaching hope.
Though I was gratified by distant hopes,
وَماand what تَبغيseeks المَنِيَّةُdeath حينَwhen تَأتيit comes

And what more does death seek when it comes
And death desires no more when it arrives
upon the closest of loved ones?
Upon those dearest, to add or take away.
خُلِقناwe were created أَنفُساًsouls وَبَنيand sons of نُفوسٍsouls
وَلَسناand we are not بِالسَلامِstone وَلاnor الحَديدِiron
We were created as souls and sons of souls,
We fashioned souls and children of those souls,
and we are neither stone nor iron.
Yet we are neither peaceful, nor tempered steel.
