لشمسto a sun وبدرٍand a full moon هلالٌa crescent بداappeared
لشمس وبدرٍ هلالٌ بدا
سماءthe heaven المعاليlofty honors بهthrough him تشرفُis ennobled
سماء المعالي به تشرفُ
To a sun and a full moon, a crescent has appeared.
The sun and a crescent moon appeared,
The heaven of lofty honors is ennobled through him.
Gracing the sublime sky above,
تولدhe was born منfrom خيرthe best أهلpeople الهدىguidance
تولد من خير أهل الهدى
بسيماby the signs محياهhis face ذاthis يعرفis known
بسيما محياه ذا يعرف
He was born of the best of the people of guidance.
Born of the best of righteous folk
This is known by the signs upon his face.
His beautiful life we know and love,
إلىto الأنسjoy حقاtruly لهُhe has نسبةa kinship
إلى الأنس حقا لهُ نسبة
وذلكand that معنىa quality بهby it يوصفhe is described
وذلك معنى به يوصف
He truly has a kinship with joy.
Truly akin to humankind at heart
And that is a quality by which he is described.
That meaning does his name evoke
فبشرso give glad tidings اباهhis father بتوفيقهof his success
فبشر اباه بتوفيقه
وارخand record the date غلامthe boy الهدىguidance يوسفYusuf
وارخ غلام الهدى يوسف
So give his father glad tidings of his success.
So congratulate his father on his guidance
And record the date: “The boy of guidance, Yusuf.”
And record: Joseph, son of light.
