لمهرجان الفرس كيف انتظار

وليس لي عنك إليه اصطبار

How can I wait for the Persians' Mihrijan festival,

when I cannot endure being apart from you until then?

كيف التأسي والحشا بالأسى

يغلي كماء القدر من فوق نار

How can I find solace, when my grief-filled heart

boils like water in a pot over a fire?

وانني ارعى نجوم الدجى

من مغرب الشمس لفجر النهار

And I watch the stars of the dark night

from sunset until the dawn of day.

ثم اقضي اليوم في كربة

وفي اعتذار من دموع غزار

Then I spend the day in anguish,

and making excuses for copious tears.

وكيف انكار الهوى في الورى

وشاهداه ادمع واصفرار

And how can love be denied among humankind,

when its two witnesses are tears and pallor?

سلافة العصر ايا منيتي

أما تهاوينا وانا صغار

O choicest wine of the age, O my heart's desire,

did we not love one another when we were young?

يذكرني اياك ريح الصبا

وكوكب الصبح وريم القفار

The east wind reminds me of you,

and the morning star and the white gazelle of the wilds,

ونغمة الطائر في ايكة

ولمعة البرق وريا العرار

and the bird's song in a thicket,

and the flash of lightning and the fragrance of arar flowers.

فيهطل الدمع على وجنتي

ويقدح الوجد بقلبي الشرار

So tears pour down upon my cheek,

and longing strikes sparks in my heart.

فدبري الحيلة في وصلتي

فليس للميعاد عندي قرار

So devise a way to be united with me,

for I find no rest awaiting the appointed meeting.
