So they brought us to al-Zahra in a state of want,

Suited to their thoroughness in taking precautions.

And around me is a mourning assembly of men of letters,

And no oryx calf but wears a torn robe.

So if death, to my eye, were like her garden,

And though in its hues it showed no pity,

    فَهلا أَجابَت وَهوَ عِندي كَبخنقي

    And my death summoned my life's blood, it would pretend not to hear;

Why, then, did it not answer, when death is to me like my hood?

O my eye, if you have any tears to spare,

To steady my patience for an hour, then pour forth.

Had it obliged, it would have said: 'Is it from scant grief

That my tears remain, or do they draw water from the sea?'

She bids me appease Time; truly she is

Ignorant indeed—who can appease an enraged one for me?

And she said, 'Do you think Time will reunite us?'

So I said to her, 'Who can give me a surmise made certain?'

Yet among the omens I read with my eye,

    I foresaw reunion after separation.

    فَلَما التقت بالطَّيفِ قالَت سَنَلتَقي

    For the lashes had been parted, just as we were;

Then, when they met through the dream-phantom, they said, 'We shall meet.'

Are you weeping for a day whose time has not yet come?

Your tears will run out before that day, so be gentle.

And since you have not seen me, you are in a lost robe,

By my life, it has indeed dried up through tattered inarticulacy.
