لاnot الراءُthe letter rāʾ تَطمعُhopes فيfor الوصالِunion وَلاnor أَناI
لا الراءُ تَطمعُ في الوصالِ وَلا أَنا
الهَجرُseparation يَجمَعُناunites us فَنحنُso we سَواءُalike
الهَجرُ يَجمَعُنا فَنحنُ سَواءُ
Neither the letter rāʾ nor I hope for union.
Neither does hope aspire for reunion, nor do I
Separation unites us, so we are alike.
Estrangement makes us equal
فَإِذاso whenever خَلَوتُI am alone كَتَبتُهاI write it فيon راحَتيmy palm
فَإِذا خَلَوتُ كَتَبتُها في راحَتي
وَبَكيتُand I weep مُنتَحباًsobbing أَناI وَالراءُand the letter rāʾ
وَبَكيتُ مُنتَحباً أَنا وَالراءُ
So whenever I am alone, I write it on my palm,
So when alone I write it at my leisure
And weep, sobbing—I and the letter rāʾ.
I weep and lament, I and hope alike
