تَعانقَembraced one another فيwithin الأَضلاعِthe ribs قَلبيmy heart وَقَلبُهاand her heart
تَعانقَ في الأَضلاعِ قَلبي وَقَلبُها
وَقامَand served لَناfor us وَحيُsilent communication of العُيونِthe eyes بِأَذرُعِas arms
وَقامَ لَنا وَحيُ العُيونِ بِأَذرُعِ
My heart and hers embraced within the ribs,
My arms enfold her, and her arms enfold me,
And the eyes’ silent speech served us as arms.
And our eyes exchange the whispering of delight;
وَضَمَّتand she folded her arms علىover رُمّانَتيهاher two pomegranates كَأَنَّماas though
وَضَمَّت على رُمّانَتيها كَأَنَّما
تعانِقُنيembrace me كَفَّاthe two hands of أَسيرٍa captive مُكَنَّعِshackled
تعانِقُني كَفَّا أَسيرٍ مُكَنَّعِ
And she folded her arms over her two pomegranates, as though
On my cheek her tresses play, and my kisses dwell
The two hands of a shackled captive were embracing me.
On her cherry lips, that console me for every slight.
