    Irises, like white necks revealed

to an enthralled lover by a beloved.

They have indeed lent our eyes all beauty,

and lent our noses every sweet scent.

Some of them love others: some, then,

stand for a lover, and others for the beloved.

So the beloved is the white one among them, when

the other turns yellow with a sorrowful lover's pallor.

They have a third, who rose high like a tale-bearer,

and stood recounting their love like an orator.

So the two of them and he, in every sense,

are like a beloved, a lover, and a watcher.
