أَناI إِنif رُمتُsought سلواًforgetfulness
أَنا إِن رُمتُ سلواً
عَنكَof you ياO قُرَّةَdelight of عَينيmy eye
عَنكَ يا قُرَّةَ عَيني
I, if I sought to forget
If I were to turn away
you, O delight of my eye,
From you, O light of my eyes,
كُنتُI would be فيin الإِثمsin كَمَنlike one who شاtook part (first fragment)
كُنتُ في الإِثم كَمَن شا
رَكَtook part (final fragment) فيin قَتلِthe killing of الحُسَينِal-Husayn
رَكَ في قَتلِ الحُسَينِ
would be as sinful as one who took
I would be like one who took part
part in the killing of al-Husayn.

لَكَyou have صَولاتٌonslaughts عَلىupon قَلmy heart (first fragment)
لَكَ صَولاتٌ عَلى قَل
بيmy heart (final fragment) دَليلاتٌsigns لحينيof my doom
بي دَليلاتٌ لحيني
Your onslaughts upon my
You have claims upon my heart,
heart foretell my doom,
Proofs until the time I die,
مثلُlike صَولاتِthe onslaughts of عَليٍّAli
مثلُ صَولاتِ عَليٍّ
يَومَon the day of بَدرٍBadr وَحُنَينِand Hunayn
يَومَ بَدرٍ وَحُنَينِ
like the onslaughts of Ali
Like Ali's charges at Badr
on the day of Badr and Hunayn.
