مُعجَمُdotted الحُسنِbeauty بِخالينِwith two moles عَلىupon
مُعجَمُ الحُسنِ بِخالينِ عَلى
ثَغرِهِhis mouth الأَصغَرthe smaller وَالخَدِّand the cheek الأَجلthe more splendid
ثَغرِهِ الأَصغَر وَالخَدِّ الأَجل
His beauty is dotted with two moles, upon
His tiny mouth and his splendid cheek.
فَالَّذيso the one فيon الخَدِّthe cheek طوراًat times آفلٌsetting
فَالَّذي في الخَدِّ طوراً آفلٌ
تَحتَbeneath صُدغٍa sidelock فَوقَabove صُبحٍa dawn قَدalready رَحَلdeparted
تَحتَ صُدغٍ فَوقَ صُبحٍ قَد رَحَل
So the one upon the cheek sometimes sets
Beneath a sidelock, above a dawn that has departed.
يَتجافىdraws aside فَإِذاthen when لاحظتهyou glance at it
يَتجافى فَإِذا لاحظته
رَجعreturned الصُّدغُthe sidelock إِلَيهِto it فَانسَدَلthen hung down
رَجع الصُّدغُ إِلَيهِ فَانسَدَل
It draws aside; then, when you glance at it,
The sidelock returns to it and hangs down.
فَكَأنَّso it is as though الصُّدغَthe sidelock يَخشىfears عابِثاًa meddler
فَكَأنَّ الصُّدغَ يَخشى عابِثاً
ثارَهُstirred it فَهوَso it عَلَيهِover it مُشتَمِلenfolding
ثارَهُ فَهوَ عَلَيهِ مُشتَمِل
As though the sidelock fears a meddler
Who stirred it, and so keeps it enfolded.
وَكَأنَّand as though المُعتليthe one rising above مَبسِمَهُhis smiling mouth
وَكَأنَّ المُعتلي مَبسِمَهُ
جاءَcame مِنfrom عِندthe side of أَخيهِits brother للقبلfor kisses
جاءَ مِن عِند أَخيهِ للقبل
And it is as though the one above his smiling mouth
Came from its brother's side for kisses;
فَسعىso it hastened حَتَّىuntil إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle اِشتَمَّهُit smelled it
فَسعى حَتَّى إِذا ما اِشتَمَّهُ
غَلَبَovercame الرَّوعُterror عَلَيهِover it فَمَثَلso it stood still
غَلَبَ الرَّوعُ عَلَيهِ فَمَثَل
So it hastened until, when it caught its scent,
Terror overcame it, and it stood still.
