فَأَبدَيتَthen you revealed وَجهاًa face تَحتَbeneath تَرجِيلthe combing of لمةٍlocks of hair
فَأَبدَيتَ وَجهاً تَحتَ تَرجِيل لمةٍ
فَكانso it was كَبدرٍlike a full moon تَحتَbeneath لَيلٍa night مُرَجَّلِcombed
فَكان كَبدرٍ تَحتَ لَيلٍ مُرَجَّلِ
So you revealed a face beneath a combed fall of hair,
Then you revealed a face beneath combed locks,
and it was like a full moon beneath a coiffed night.
and it was like a full moon beneath a combed-out night.
وَمَثَّلهُand likened it بِالبَدرِto the full moon أَيضاًalso حَقيقةًtruly
وَمَثَّلهُ بِالبَدرِ أَيضاً حَقيقةً
بِغاليةٍwith ghāliyah, a musk-based perfume صِرفٍpure أَدَقُّthe subtlest مُمَثِّلِpainter
بِغاليةٍ صِرفٍ أَدَقُّ مُمَثِّلِ
And he portrayed it as the full moon as well—in very truth—
And it was truly likened to the full moon as well,
with pure ghāliya, the most meticulous of image-makers.
with pure ghāliyah perfume, by the subtlest painter.
عذارانِtwo sideburns خُطَّاwere both traced فَوقَupon وَجهكَyour face زينةًas an adornment
عذارانِ خُطَّا فَوقَ وَجهكَ زينةً
عَلَيهِupon it وَحُباًand out of love للعذارfor the cheek-down المعجَّلِbrought on early
عَلَيهِ وَحُباً للعذار المعجَّلِ
Two side-locks were traced across your face as an adornment
Two sideburns were traced upon your face as an adornment
upon it—and two loves for that prematurely appearing cheek-down.
upon it, and out of love for cheek-down appearing early.
وَقَدand already طُرَّhad sprouted مِنهاfrom it شارِبٌa moustache فَوقَabove مَبسِمٍa smiling mouth
وَقَد طُرَّ مِنها شارِبٌ فَوقَ مَبسِمٍ
كَغُصنِlike a bough of عَقيقٍcarnelian بِاللآليwith pearls مُكَلَّلِcrowned
كَغُصنِ عَقيقٍ بِاللآلي مُكَلَّلِ
And already from it a moustache has begun to sprout above a smiling mouth,
And from it a moustache had sprouted above a smiling mouth,
like a carnelian bough wreathed in pearls.
