Upon my liver the clouds pour down and shed tears,

And at my anguish the doves weep and cry out.

As though the dripping clouds were washing me for burial,

And those doves were loud-voiced mourners grieving at my loss.

    وَلكنَّني باقٍ فَلوموا وَعَنِّفوا

    Lo, Layla has departed, and her household has gone away;

And yet I live on—so blame me and rebuke me.

And for her departure I discerned in morning’s face

A wasting thinness, as though dawn were gravely ill like me.

And our last encounter was a sip that moistened my breast,

So it became cold winter, though it was summer-hot.

And she was afraid and turned away, as though

Her heavy haunches made her shuffle in the fetters of her anklets.

And she sent a greeting from fingertips that seemed,

In flashing and swiftness, a fleeting bolt of lightning,

On a wrist as white as camphor, which she conceals

With ghaliya perfume of its hue, and she tints her fingertips.
