فَذاكَfor that مُؤَذِّنُcaller to prayer الدينِthe faith القَديمِancient
Come, drink it unmixed to the tolling of the bell,
Drink it down in one gulp, like a church bell
For that is the muezzin of the ancient faith.
ringing out the old faith loud and clear.
وَصرتُand I went إِلىto الخَلاءthe open space فَأَدرَكَتنيthen they overtook me
بِهِin it الأَكواسُthe cups فيin عَددnumber النُّجومِthe stars
And I went into the open; then I was overtaken
I wandered off alone, till cups came clinking
There by cups as numerous as the stars.
after me, countless as stars in the sky,
كَأَنَّas though الكوسَthe cups إِذwhen حُثَّتwere urged on بِإِثريon my heels
كَواكبُstars إِثرَin pursuit of شَيطانٍa devil رَجيمِaccursed
As though the cups, when sent hastening after me,
As if the bell that stirred to follow me
Were stars in pursuit of an accursed devil.
rang out the steps of some accursed fiend.
