تَأَمَّلcontemplate بِإِثرِin the wake of الغَيمِthe clouds مِنamong زَهرةthe blossoms of الثَّرىthe earth
حَياةَthe revival of عُيونٍeyes مُتنَthey died قَبلَbefore التَّنَعُّمِenjoying delight
Contemplate, in the clouds' wake, among the earth's blossoms,
the revival of eyes that died before knowing delight.
كَأَنَّas though الرَّبيعَspring الطلقَcheerful أَقبَلَcame مُهدِياًoffering a gift
بِطَلعَةِwith the face of مَعشوقٍa beloved إِلىto عَينِthe eye of مُغرَمِa passionate lover
As though smiling spring had come bearing as a gift
a beloved's face to a lover's eye.
تَعَجَّبتُI marveled مِنat غَوصِthe sinking of الحَياthe rain فيinto حشاthe heart of الثَّرىthe earth
فَأَفشىso it disclosed الَّذيwhat فيهِin it وَلمand did not يَتَكَلَّمِspeak
I marveled at the rain's sinking into the earth's heart;
then it disclosed what lay within it, without speaking.
كَأَنَّas though الَّذيwhat يُسقيwaters الثَّرىthe earth صِرفُunmixed قَهوَةٍwine
تنمُّtells tales عَلَيهِagainst it بِالضَّميرabout the inner secret المكتَّمِclosely concealed
As though what waters the earth were unmixed wine,
betraying the secret it had kept concealed.
أَرىI see حَسَناًbeauty فيon صَفحةٍa face قَدalready تَغيَّرتhas changed
كَبشرٍlike cheerfulness بَداappeared فيon الوَجهthe face بَعدafter التَّجهمِscowling
I see beauty on a face now transformed,
like cheer appearing on a face after a scowl.
ألاbehold ياO سَماءَsky of الأَرضِthe earth أُعطيتِyou have been granted بهجَةًsplendor
تطالعناyou greet us مِنهاfrom it بِوَجهwith a face مقسَّمِfinely formed
Behold, O sky of earth, you have been granted splendor,
through which you greet us with a finely formed face.
وَإِنand if قالتِsays الأَرضُthe earth المنعمluxuriant رَوضهاits garden
ليَmine is الفَضلُsuperiority فيin فَخريmy glory عَلَيكover you فَسَلِّميthen concede
And if the earth, whose garden is luxuriant, says,
“I surpass you in glory,” then concede.
فَخضرةُfor the greenness of ماwhat فيهاis in her تَفوقكsurpasses you خُضرَةin greenness
وَنوارهاand her blossoms فيهاwithin her ثَواقبpiercingly bright أَنجمِstars
For the green within her surpasses your green,
and her blossoms within her are stars of piercing light.
وَإِنand if جئتَهاyou bring her بِالشَّمسِwith the sun وَالبَدرِand the full moon وَالحَياand the rain
مفاخرةًin rivalry جاءَتshe brings بِأَسنىwith one brighter وَأَكرمِand nobler
And if you bring her the sun, the full moon, and rain,
in rivalry, she brings one brighter and nobler:

to whose lineage all lofty virtues trace their own.
