اشرَبِdrink الكاسَthe cup ياO نَصيرُNasir وَهاتِand bring
إِنَّindeed هَذاthis النهارthe day مِنamong حَسناتيmy good deeds
Drink the cup, Nasir, and pass it here!
Drink the cup, O Nasir, and bring more.
For truly, this day counts among my good deeds.
Indeed, this day is one of my good deeds.
بِأَبيwith my father as ransom غُرَّةٌa radiant brow ترىyou see الشَّخصَthe figure فيهاin it
فيin صَفاءٍclarity أَصفَىclearer مِنَthan المِرآةِthe mirror
My father be ransom for my radiant delight—you can see a person in her,
My father be ransom for a radiant brow in which you see a person's image,
with a clarity clearer than a mirror.
with a clarity surpassing that of a mirror.
تُسرِعُhasten الناسthe people نَحوهاtoward it بِازدِحامٍin a throng
كازدِحامِlike the thronging الحَجيجthe pilgrims فيat عَرَفاتِArafat
She sends people hurrying toward her in a crush,
People hasten toward it in a throng,
like the pilgrims thronging at Arafat.
like the thronging of pilgrims at Arafat.
هاتِهاbring it ياO نَصيرُNasir إِنّاindeed we اِجتَمَعناwe have gathered
بِقُلُوبٍwith hearts فيin الدِّينِreligion مُختَلِفاتِdiffering
Pass her here, Nasir; we have gathered
Bring it, O Nasir; indeed, we have gathered
with hearts divided in matters of faith.
with hearts differing in religion.
إِنَّماonly نَحنُwe فيin مَجالسِgatherings لَهوٍrevelry
نَشرَبُwe drink الراحَwine ثُمَّthen أَنتَyou مُواتِobliging
We are here only for gatherings of merriment:
We are merely in gatherings of revelry,
we drink the wine, and then you fall in with us.
drinking wine, and you, in turn, are obliging.
فَإِذاthen, when ماemphatic particle اِنقَضىran out دنانٌwine jars عَلىin اللَّهrevelry (word continues)
وِending of 'revelry' اِعتَمَدناwe made for مَواضِعَplaces الصَّلَواتِprayers
And when the wine-jars have run dry amid the revelry,
Then, when the wine jars are spent in revelry,
we make our way to the places of prayer.
we make for the places of prayer.
لَوif مَضىpassed الدَّهرُtime دُونَwithout راحٍwine وَقَصفٍand carousing
لَعَدَدناwe would count هذاthis مِنamong السَّيِّئاتِmisdeeds
If all our lifetime passed without wine or revelry,
Were time to pass without wine and carousing,
we would count that among our sins.
we would count this among misdeeds.
