    بطنُها سَدَّاه وَالأَرضَ نَسَج

    The earth was clothed in a lovely carpet;

    Her belly laid its warp and wove the earth.

    ربّ سرٍّ أَحرَجَ الصدر خَرج

    She brought forth her secrets when hard-pressed;

    Many a secret that cramped the breast has come out.

    Like a lover whose breast grew tight with longing,

    So what had seethed within his breast came to light.

    My friend, if a beautiful face delights you,

    Let it be the face of joyous spring.

    The garden celebrated its wedding, and among its songstresses

    Is the mother of one whose name is the opposite of 'ugly'.

    She sings first in rajaz,

    Then, when she prolongs her song, she sings in hazaj.

    And it is as though the garden, from the pen of Abu

    Bakr al-ʿĀriḍ, were embroidery and brocade.
