And I gazed through tears—as though

    I gazed through rain-laden clouds—

at Abu al-Abbas’s dwelling, where I used to see him,

hoping Abu al-Abbas might appear before my eyes.

And when my gaze turned back, having failed to see his form,

I returned to his image in my thoughts.

It was as though, so brief was his life, we had delighted

in a flash of lightning or a glimpse of a bird.

And if he makes his home among the graves,

then our homes after his passing are like graves.

And they said, “He was young, so bear his loss patiently.”

So I said, “The hardest loss is the loss of little ones.”
