A coat of mail made of feathers appeared upon the falcon;
A suit of feathered armor appeared upon the goshawk,
you would think it wore it to guard against bewildered birds.
so you think it shields itself against the bewildered birds.

And a little shield lies over the white, as though
its armor had been poured upon it over a yalmaq tunic.
its armor were poured over it, atop a tunic.

It went forth red-eyed, so that you would think
It has become red-eyed; you would think that
it bore the eye of an angry man, enraged at the birds.
it has the eye of one angry and enraged against the birds.

Its two shanks had been stained with saffron until it seemed
And its two shanks are dyed yellow with wars, so that it is as though
a dyer among the Pleiades had colored them without perfecting the work.
it had a dyer in the Pleiades who had not dyed it fully.

As though the fingers of its hand—each finger
tipped with branching, vein-marked sons of its own.
among them—were tipped with a long-tailed letter nūn.

And they have been clothed in the color of ink, as though they were
the fingertips of scribes writing upon parchment.
scribes’ fingertips writing on a polished sheet.

If the falcon has a coat of mail made of feathers,
So if the goshawk has a suit of feathered armor,
then the dastabān gauntlet has an ornate cuirass of brocade.
the falconer’s glove has a cuirass of ornate brocade.

Upon it, wrought in pure gold, are a shank and an eye,
Upon it are a shank and an eye of pure gold,
making it seem kohl-eyed and adorned about the legs.
so it became like one kohled and ankleted with gold.

I likened its two shanks and the tuft of its foot
I gave its two shanks, then the tuft of its hand,
to maidens’ jewelry, worn in forelocks and upon legs.
maidens’ jewels, worn on forelocks and shanks.
غَدَوناwe went out in the morning بسربwith a flock ضُمَّرٍlean ones مثلِlike ضمَّرٍlean ones

At dawn we set out with a flight of lean birds, like lean steeds;
We went out in the morning with a flock of lean birds, like lean steeds;
when their hindquarters drew level, they swiftly overtook.
when their flanks draw tight, they overtake.

They were borne on left arms toward the dust cloud of their charge,
They were carried on left hands toward their dust-cloud,
as horses bear true and valiant riders.
as horses bore stalwart horsemen.

When they beat restlessly above the palms, you would think them
When they fluttered above the palms, you thought them,
held suspended because they were kept away from their prey.
because they were away from their quarry, suspended in midair.

Then they were loosed into their field, as though they were
thunderbolts—whatever birds they met, they struck down.
thunderbolts, striking down whatever birds they met.
