And I marvel only at the Persians—indeed, they

Have wise sayings that have spread through East and West—

For failing to worship Zaynab's fire,

While a fire of passion born of her blazes in my heart.

And I have no wish to endear sins to them,

But a sin's beauty is an excuse for the sin.

And how lovely a fire it is, blazing for hospitality,

Lawful for the people of the earth, forbidden to the lovesick lover.

And the heat of that fire is nothing but safety

And coolness beside the fire lodged in my heart.
