أَفيis it over الخَمرِwine لامَتshe reproached خلَّتيmy beloved مُستَهامَهاher lovesick lover
أَفي الخَمرِ لامَت خلَّتي مُستَهامَها
كَفَرتُI became faithless بِكَأسيto my cup إِنif أَطَعتُI heeded مَلامَهاher reproach
كَفَرتُ بِكَأسي إِن أَطَعتُ مَلامَها
Has my beloved reproached her lovesick lover over wine?
Is it in wine my friend blamed me, reproaching me
I would be faithless to my cup if I heeded her reproach.
I reject my cup if I heed her blame
لِمَحمولَةٍfor that borne فيin الفلكِthe Ark مِنfrom جَنَّةِthe garden المُنىof wishes
لِمَحمولَةٍ في الفلكِ مِن جَنَّةِ المُنى
قَدalready أوصيَwas charged with نوحٌNoah غَرسَهاplanting it وَضُمامهاand safeguarding it
قَد أوصيَ نوحٌ غَرسَها وَضُمامها
For wine borne aboard the Ark from the garden of wishes,
Of a plantation on a ship from the gardens of delight
Noah had been charged with planting and safeguarding it.
Noah commended its planting and guarding
فَخادَعَهُthen he tricked him إِبليسُIblis عَنهاout of it لِعِلمِهِbecause of his knowledge
فَخادَعَهُ إِبليسُ عَنها لِعِلمِهِ
بِهاof it فَرَأىso he resolved on كِتمانهاconcealing it وَاغتِنامَهاand seizing it
بِها فَرَأى كِتمانها وَاغتِنامَها
Then Iblis tricked him out of it, because he knew
But Satan deceived him about it, knowing
Of it, and so resolved to conceal it and seize it.
Of it, so he saw its concealment and seizing as gain
فَفازَso he won بِثُلثَيهاtwo-thirds of it وَنوحٌand Noah بِثُلثِهاone-third of it
فَفازَ بِثُلثَيها وَنوحٌ بِثُلثِها
وَلَولاand were it not for مَغيبيmy absence عَنهُfrom him لَمnot يَكُhe would have رامَهاsought it
وَلَولا مَغيبي عَنهُ لَم يَكُ رامَها
So he won two-thirds of it, and Noah one-third.
So he won two thirds of it, and Noah one third
Had I not been away from him, he would not have sought it.
And had I not been absent from him, it would not have lost its prestige
لَهُfor him حَظُّthe share أُنثىof a woman وَهوَand it is حَظٌa share مُذَكَّرٌmasculine
لَهُ حَظُّ أُنثى وَهوَ حَظٌ مُذَكَّرٌ
قَليلٌlittle لِعَينيfor my eye أَنto تُطيلَprolong اِنسِجامَهاits flow of tears
قَليلٌ لِعَيني أَن تُطيلَ اِنسِجامَها
He has a woman's share, though it is a man's portion;
To him the share of the female, yet his share was male
For my eye to weep at length is little enough.
Little to my eye that it lengthens its interweaving
وَإِنَّاand indeed we لورَّاثٌare surely heirs وَقَدand already ماتَhas died جَدُّناour forefather
وَإِنَّا لورَّاثٌ وَقَد ماتَ جَدُّنا
غَبيناًdefrauded وَإِنَّاand indeed we لاnot نُجيزsanction اِقتِسامَهاits division
غَبيناً وَإِنَّا لا نُجيز اِقتِسامَها
And we are surely heirs, and our forefather has died
We are inheritors, and our grandfather died
Defrauded—and we do not sanction its division.
Absent, and we do not allow its dividing
