فَلَيسَfor he is not كمنlike those who إِنif تَسَلهُمyou ask them عَطاءًa gift
فَلَيسَ كمن إِن تَسَلهُم عَطاءً
يمدُّواthey stretch out أَكفَّهمُtheir palms لِلعَطاءِfor a gift
يمدُّوا أَكفَّهمُ لِلعَطاءِ
For he is not like those who, if you ask them for a gift,
So they are not like those who, if you ask a favor,
stretch out their palms for a gift.
Extend their palms for gifts.
إِذاwhen جئتهمyou come to them بِالمَديحwith praise اِنزَوَواthey withdraw
إِذا جئتهم بِالمَديح اِنزَوَوا
كَأَنَّكas though you تَأَتيهمُcome to them بِالهِجاءِwith satire
كَأَنَّك تَأَتيهمُ بِالهِجاءِ
When you come to them with praise, they withdraw,
When you come to them with praise they shy away
as though you were coming to them with satire.
As though you brought them insults.
