Upon the traces of that sanctuary and those dwellings,
Peace upon the abode of that fever and those dwellings,
Be peace, offered as a gift at forenoon and in the late afternoons.
Peace greeted by the morning and notes of song.
سلامpeace وياand oh ليتwould that الرياحthe winds تحمَّلتcarried
إليهاto them فؤاديmy heart والهوىand love كانwas حامليmy bearer
Peace! Oh, would that the winds carried
Peace, and would that the winds had borne
My heart to them, and love were my bearer!
To it my heart and love had carried me!
وقفتI halted بهاthere وجداًout of longing وللهand to God وقفةa halt
أنازعهاI wrestle with it روحيmy soul ووجديَand my longing قاتليmy killer
I halted there in longing—by God, what a halt!
I stood weeping with longing, for God a stand
I wrestle with it for my soul, and my longing kills me.
Where my soul contests with me, and yearning kills me.
بكيتI wept وابكيتand I made weep الرسومَthe ruins صبابةًout of ardent longing
ورقّand grew tender لحاليat my plight خُلَّتيmy close companion وعواذليand my reproachers
I wept and made the ruins weep with ardent longing,
I wept and my copious tears rained
And my close companion and my reproachers softened at my plight.
For my state, my solitude and my wanton ways.
خليليّmy two friends ايامُthe days of الشبابyouth قصيرةshort
وماand not هيthey الاَّbut دولةa turn of fortune بالتداولِby turns
My two friends, the days of youth are short,
My friend, the days of youth are short
And they are but a turn of fortune, passed from one to another.
And they are but a shifting kingdom.

وتقطعهاand cut through them الآمالhopes قطعthe traversing of المراحلِthe journey's stages
Loved ones embitter them with abandonment and separation,
Friends mar them with estrangement and pining
And hopes cut through them as through the stages of a journey.
And hopes cut through them like the stages of a journey.

نودعwe bid farewell to بدراًa full moon آفلاًsetting إثرafter آفلِa setting one
And our union is but a meeting that leads to parting;
Our reunion was nothing but parting for a company
We bid farewell to one setting full moon after another.
Bidding farewell to a waning moon, following a waning moon.

واسلوand I cease to yearn ولوeven if كانwere الوفاءfaithfulness مماطليkeeping me waiting
God forbid that I forget their pledge, despite the distance,
God has decreed I should not forget the past
And cease to yearn, even if faithfulness kept me waiting.
And so I have made light of their troth, even if loyalty fails me.

And, by God, may my right hand forget me if
By God, may my oath forget me when I ask
My heart forgets its love for the noble-hearted man, scion of the virtuous.
My heart for the love of generous souls!

I ask my eye about myself, while he dwells
Ask about me of my watcher though he stays
In my heart—and oh, would that my heart kept its bond with me!
My heart, and would my heart had been my questioner!

So may your radiant qualities never cease to be a watering place,
Never did I cease to make your rare qualities
To which every drinker hastens in pursuit of eminence.
A spring to which every eminent one comes down to drink.
