مِنfrom ثَناياfront teeth العذراءِthe virgin لاحshone بريقa gleam
مِن ثَنايا العذراءِ لاح بريق
فجَرىthen flowed مِنfrom دموعِtears عينيmy eye عقيقُcarnelian
فجَرى مِن دموعِ عيني عقيقُ
From the virgin’s front teeth a gleam shone,
From the folds of the immaculate one shone a light
Then carnelian flowed from the tears of my eye.
So from my eyes ran liquid ruby tears
حبّذاhow lovely حبّذاhow lovely معاهدُhaunts سلعٍSalʿ
حبّذا حبّذا معاهدُ سلعٍ
وَربوعٌand abodes فيهاin them الحبيبُthe beloved الحقيقُtrue
وَربوعٌ فيها الحبيبُ الحقيقُ
How lovely, how lovely are the haunts of Salʿ,
How excellent, how excellent were the treaty grounds of Sulh
And the abodes where the true beloved dwells:
And its meadows where dwells the true beloved
أَحمدٌAhmad حامدٌHamid (one who praises) محمّدٌMuhammad المحbeginning of “the Praised One”
أَحمدٌ حامدٌ محمّدٌ المح
مودُcompletion of “the Praised One” خيرthe best الورىcreation النبيّthe Prophet الصدوقُthe truthful one
مودُ خير الورى النبيّ الصدوقُ
Ahmad, Hamid, Muhammad, the Praised One,
Ahmad the ever-praising, Muhammad the trusted prophet
The best of creation, the truthful Prophet.
The best of mankind, the truthful and gentle messenger
سادَsurpassed كلَّall الوَرىcreation بكلّin every كمالٍperfection
سادَ كلَّ الوَرى بكلّ كمالٍ
خيرُthe best حرٍّa free man للَّهto God عبدٌa servant رقيقُin bondage
خيرُ حرٍّ للَّه عبدٌ رقيقُ
He surpassed all creation in every perfection,
He brought perfection to the whole world
The best of free men, a servant in bondage to God.
The best freeman of God, a tender servant
ليسَthere is no للَّهto God عزّHe is mighty جلّHe is majestic تعالىHe is exalted
ليسَ للَّه عزّ جلّ تعالى
غيرهُother than him للأنامِfor created beings طرّاًall together طريقُa path
غيرهُ للأنامِ طرّاً طريقُ
To God—mighty, majestic, exalted—there is no
None but him does God, Mighty and Glorious be He
Path for all creation except through him.
For people provide as path and guide
لَمdid not يوفَّقbe granted success موفّقٌone granted success قطّever إلّاexcept
لَم يوفَّق موفّقٌ قطّ إلّا
جاءَهcame to him مِنfrom طريقهhis path التوفيقُsuccess
جاءَه مِن طريقه التوفيقُ
No one has ever been granted success unless
Never was any guided to success
Success came to him through his path.
Unless he came to him for guidance
فَعَليهso upon him لربّهto his Lord وحدَهhim alone الحقbeginning of “the obligation”
فَعَليه لربّه وحدَه الحق
قُcompletion of “the obligation” وكلٌّand all of them لهfor him عليهمincumbent upon them حقوقُrights
قُ وكلٌّ له عليهم حقوقُ
Thus his duty is to his Lord alone,
For his Lord alone rightfully
And he has rights over them all.
Belongs obedience, and to each person duties are due
خُلقَwere created العالمونَall beings مِنfrom نورهhis light فهbeginning of “so he”
خُلقَ العالمونَ مِن نوره فه
وَcompletion of “he” ببرِّof dutiful kindness الأبناءthe children منهمfrom them خليقُworthy
وَ ببرِّ الأبناء منهم خليقُ
All beings were created from his light, so he
The worlds were created from his light, so he
Is worthy of filial devotion from them.
Is parent to the righteous among them
والدُfather الكلّof all فيin الحقيقةtruth لكنbut
والدُ الكلّ في الحقيقة لكن
بعضُsome أبنائهِof his children لديهمthey have عقوقُfilial disobedience
بعضُ أبنائهِ لديهم عقوقُ
He is the father of all in truth, yet
Parent of all in reality, though some
Some of his children show filial disobedience.
Of his children are to him disobedient
خَلَقcreated اللَّهGod خلقهHis creatures ففريقٌso one group
خَلَق اللَّه خلقه ففريقٌ
لِجنانٍfor gardens of Paradise وللسعيرِand for the blazing Fire فريقُa group
لِجنانٍ وللسعيرِ فريقُ
God created His creatures: one group
God created His creation, so a group
For gardens of Paradise, and one for the blazing Fire.
Is for the gardens, and a group for hellfire
