Damascus is not our destination—no, nor Aleppo;
But our choice riding camels set out for Mecca.

وَالدمعُand the tears منfrom فرَحيmy joy فيin حجرهاher lap صببُpouring
The Mother of Cities—I cannot forget when she drew me close,
As my tears of joy streamed into her lap.

She graced me with union that passed like a vision;
Rapture shakes me whenever I call it to mind.

Life is nothing but brief moments spent in her;
All other moments are brass; those are pure gold.

Had the sending of the Chosen One been the sole cause
Of her glory, that cause would have sufficed her.

She surpassed all God's lands in honor
Through him; and through him the Arabs surpassed those lands' inhabitants.

The sun of guidance—every light is borrowed from him;
Yet he is the axis of all lofty virtues.
ماnever جارَdealt unjustly يَوماًon any day زَمانيmy fate فاِستجرتُso I sought refuge بهin him

Whenever my fate wronged me and I sought refuge in him,
Victory came, and through him troubles were dispelled.
لاdo not ترجُhope for خُلقاًany creature سواهother than him للندىfor generosity أبداًever

Never seek generosity from any creature but him;
For with this one, in whom hope is placed, the quest ends.
