لاdo not تَلُمنيblame me عَلىfor ظهورِthe appearance of عُبوسيmy frown
لا تَلُمني عَلى ظهورِ عُبوسي
فَبِقلبيfor in my heart منَfrom النوىseparation كلّevery بوسِwoe
فَبِقلبي منَ النوى كلّ بوسِ
Do not blame me for my visible frown;
Do not blame me for my sullen appearance
for my heart holds every woe of separation.
For in my heart there is much sorrow and grief
لَمhas not تَنلattained مِنfrom وصالِunion with طيبةTayba نفسيmy soul
لَم تَنل مِن وصالِ طيبة نفسي
سُؤلَهاits desire وهيَand she is منيةٌa cherished wish للنفوسِfor souls
سُؤلَها وهيَ منيةٌ للنفوسِ
My soul has not attained, through union with Tayba,
It could not attain the fragrance of a pleasant soul
its desire—and she is the longing of souls.
Ask it while it is intent upon souls
بَلدةٌa city سادَتِsurpassed البلادَthe lands وأَضحتand became
بَلدةٌ سادَتِ البلادَ وأَضحت
أَنفسَthe most precious part of الأرضِthe earth بالنبيّthrough the Prophet النفيسِthe precious
أَنفسَ الأرضِ بالنبيّ النفيسِ
A city that surpassed all lands and became
A country whose people excelled and became
the earth's most precious place through the precious Prophet.
The best of all lands with the precious Prophet
هيَshe أمُّmother of الأنوارِthe lights قدindeed حلّهاdwelt in her المخthe Chosen One (first fragment)
هيَ أمُّ الأنوارِ قد حلّها المخ
تارُChosen One (completion) بدرfull moon of البدورِthe full moons شمسsun of الشموسِthe suns
تارُ بدر البدورِ شمس الشموسِ
She is the mother of lights; in her dwelt the Chosen
It is the mother of all lights which the brain has adorned
One, full moon of full moons, sun of suns.
The full moon of moons, the sun of suns
خيرُbest of كلّall الأخيارِthe virtuous أعلىhighest of الأعاليthe exalted
خيرُ كلّ الأخيارِ أعلى الأعالي
فيin المعاليnoble qualities رئيسُchief of كلّevery رئيسِchief
في المعالي رئيسُ كلّ رئيسِ
Best of all the virtuous, highest of the exalted,
The best of all the best, the highest of the high
in noble qualities, chief of every chief.
In the most sublime, the leader of all leaders
نخبةُchosen one of اللَّهGod مِنfrom جميعِall البراياcreatures
نخبةُ اللَّه مِن جميعِ البرايا
زبدةُcream of الخلقِcreation صفوةُelect of القدّوسِthe Holy One
زبدةُ الخلقِ صفوةُ القدّوسِ
God's chosen one from among all creatures,
Allah's elite of all creation
the cream of creation, the Holy One's elect.
The cream of mankind, the choicest of the holy
طَلعتappeared مُعجزاتهُhis miracles واِستمرّتand persisted
طَلعت مُعجزاتهُ واِستمرّت
مُشرقاتradiant الأنوارِlights وسطamid الطروسِthe manuscript pages
مُشرقات الأنوارِ وسط الطروسِ
His miracles appeared and have remained
Its miracles dawned and continued
radiant with light amid the manuscript pages.
Illuminations shining amidst the Pleiades
لَيسَnot تَخفىare hidden إلّاexcept عَلىfrom طامسِclouded العقthe mind (first fragment)
لَيسَ تَخفى إلّا عَلى طامسِ العق
لِmind (completion) غريقِdrowned in الضلالerror أعمىblind تعيسِwretched
لِ غريقِ الضلال أعمى تعيسِ
They are hidden only from one of clouded
Hidden only from one who blinds his intellect
mind, drowned in error, blind and wretched.
To the drowned in misguidance, the blind miserable one
أسفرَتshone forth كالنجومِlike the stars تَهديbring guidance وتُرديand bring ruin
أسفرَت كالنجومِ تَهدي وتُردي
لِنفيسٍto a noble one منamong الورىhumankind وخسيسِand a base one
لِنفيسٍ من الورى وخسيسِ
They shone like stars, bringing guidance and ruin
It shone like stars guiding and leading
to the noble among humankind and the base.
The precious from all people and the lowly
فهيَthus they are لِلمُؤمنينfor the believers سعدُgood fortune سعودٍgood fortunes
فهيَ لِلمُؤمنين سعدُ سعودٍ
وَعَلىand upon الكافرينِthe unbelievers نحسill fortune نحوسِill fortunes
وَعَلى الكافرينِ نحس نحوسِ
Thus, for believers, they are the best of good fortunes;
For the faithful it is endless good fortune
and for unbelievers, the worst of ill fortunes.
While for disbelievers it is perpetual ill fate
