وَصلَhave arrived السراةُthe night travelers وأنتَwhile you ماكِثremaining behind
وَصلَ السراةُ وأنتَ ماكِث
أَأمنتَhave you felt safe? أَحداثthe occurrences الحوادِثof calamities
أَأمنتَ أَحداث الحوادِث
The night travelers have arrived, while you remain behind.
The caravan departed while you lingered
Do you feel safe from the onset of calamities?
Did you feel secure from the blows of fate?
سَحَرتكhas bewitched you دُنياworldly life لَمnot تزلceased
سَحَرتك دُنيا لَم تزل
أَنفاسُthe breaths زَهرتهاof its blossom نوافِثblowing spells
أَنفاسُ زَهرتها نوافِث
Worldly life has bewitched you; still
You were spellbound by a world that does not last
its blossom's breaths blow their spells.
Whose exhilarating breaths are but scattering winds
بِزخارفٍwith finery مَلَكتhas captured هواdesire
بِزخارفٍ مَلَكت هوا
كَyour فأنتَso you فيهاin it الدهرَall your days رافِثindulging in lust
كَ فأنتَ فيها الدهرَ رافِث
With finery it has captured your desire;
With ornaments that captivated your passion
so you spend all your days in it indulging in lust.
So you lingered in it lifetimes coming and going
لِمwhy لاnot تسيرُdo you journey لخيرِto the best of خلcreation (beginning)
لِم لا تسيرُ لخيرِ خل
قِcreation (completion) اللَّهGod أفضلthe finest of كلّevery حادِثcreated being
قِ اللَّه أفضل كلّ حادِث
Why do you not journey to the best of
Why don’t you set forth for the good of the people?
God's creation, the finest of all created beings?
Saying: God is best over every matter
المُصطفىthe Chosen One مِنfrom آلthe lineage of ساShem (beginning)
المُصطفى مِن آل سا
مٍShem (completion) مِنin preference to بَنيthe descendants of حامٍHam ويافِثand Japheth
مٍ مِن بَني حامٍ ويافِث
The Chosen One, from the lineage of Shem,
Al-Mustafa from the family of Saam
chosen above the descendants of Ham and Japheth;
From the tribes of Ham and Yaafith
سرّthe secret of البريّةcreation صفوةِthe chosen one of الthe
سرّ البريّة صفوةِ ال
خلّاقCreator مِنfrom among كلّall الحوادِثcreated things
خلّاق مِن كلّ الحوادِث
the secret of creation, the chosen one of the
Secret of the wilderness, elite of all creations
Creator, from among all created things.
Over every matter and happening
هوَhe أوّلٌfirst والشمسand the sun ثاsecond (beginning)
هوَ أوّلٌ والشمس ثا
نيsecond (completion) نورهِhis light والبدرُand the full moon ثالِثthird
ني نورهِ والبدرُ ثالِث
He is first, and the sun is second
He is the first, and the sun is second
to his light, and the full moon third.
His light, and the moon is third
فَهُناكَso there تأمنُyou are safe مِنfrom صروvicissitudes (beginning)
فَهُناكَ تأمنُ مِن صرو
فِvicissitudes (completion) الدهرِof time والكربand the afflictions الكوارِثdevastating
فِ الدهرِ والكرب الكوارِث
There, then, you are safe from the vicissitudes
So there you will be safe from the evils of time
of time and from devastating afflictions.
And disasters that cause anguish and grief
وَتعيشُand you live مُرتاحَat ease الضماthe inner thoughts (beginning)
وَتعيشُ مُرتاحَ الضما
ئرِinner thoughts (completion) غيرnot تعبانٍweary ولاهِثand panting
ئرِ غير تعبانٍ ولاهِث
And you live with your inner thoughts at peace,
And you will live comfortably free of worries
neither weary nor panting.
Not tired or perplexed in the least
وَإِذاand if حَلَفتَyou swear بأنّthat مَثabode (beginning)
وَإِذا حَلَفتَ بأنّ مَث
واكَyour abode (completion) الجِنانParadise فلستَso you are not حانِثswearing falsely
واكَ الجِنان فلستَ حانِث
And if you swear that your abode
And if you swear that your likeness is paradise
is Paradise, you will not have sworn falsely.
You would not be lying in the least
