On the day Umm Khalid wept, we were neither

Sick with an ailment nor sound in health.

And she rose to sing to the drinkers, their eyes red,

Her hands and feet dyed, wearing a sash.

And it mattered little to us that you should spend the night kneeling,

    In hardship, O Ibn Rabah’s Bactrian she-camel,

And be denied spring’s rain, and trudge

With a wineskin for my drinking companions every morning.
