وَراءَbehind بُيوتِdwellings الحَيِّthe tribe مُرتَجِزاًchanting rajaz verse أَشدوI sing
وَفيهِنَّand in them هِندٌHind وَهيَand she is خودٌa beautiful young woman غَريرَةٌguileless
Behind the tribe’s dwellings I sing, chanting rajaz verse.
Behind the houses of the neighborhood I sing
And in them is Hind, a lovely, guileless young woman.
Within them are Hindi and she is charming
وَمُنيَةُand the desire قَلبيof my heart دونَrather than أَترابِهاher peers هِندُHind
فَسدّدنَso they filled أَخصاصَgaps البُيوتِthe dwellings بَأَعيُنٍwith eyes
And Hind, rather than her peers, is my heart’s desire.
And my heart's beloved is Hindi among her peers
So they filled the dwellings’ gaps with eyes
So they peered through the windows of the houses
حَكَتresembled قُضُباًswords فيin كُلِّevery قَلبٍheart لَهاfor them غمدُa sheath
وَقُلنَand they said أَلاlisten! مِنfrom أَينَwhere أَقبَلَcame ذاthis الفَتىthe young man
That resembled swords, with a sheath for them in every heart.
She had pierced arrows in each heart that loved her
And they said, “Listen, where has this young man come from?
And said - oh, where did this young man come from?
وَمَنشأُهُand his birthplace إِمّاeither تُهامَةُTihamah أَوor نَجدُNajd
وَفيand in لَفظِهِhis speech عُلوِيَّةٌloftiness مِنof فَصاحَةٍeloquence
And his birthplace is either Tihamah or Najd.
Is he from Tihama or Najd?
And his speech has a lofty eloquence,
And in his words is eloquence and clarity
وَقَدand indeed كانَwas مِنfrom أَعطافِهِhis sides يَقطُرُdripping المَجدُglory
And indeed glory was dripping from his sides.”
And from his sides glory used to drip
