وَإِنَّand indeed نَديميmy drinking companion غَيرَwithout شَكٍّdoubt مُكَرَّمٌhonored
لَدىin the presence of وَعِنديand with me مِنof هَواهُhis desire ماwhatever اِرتَضىhe has chosen
And my drinking companion is honored, without doubt,
My boon companion, without doubt, is honored
In my presence; with me he has whatever suits his wishes.
In my presence, whatever he desires he has obtained
وَلَستُand I am not لَهُto him فيover فَضلَةِthe remainder of الكَأسِthe cup قائِلاًsaying
لَأَصرَعَهُso I may lay him low سُكراًwith drunkenness تَحَسَّsip! وَقَدthough already أَبىhe has refused
Nor do I tell him, over the wine left in the cup,
And I do not say to him, in offering the cup excessively
'Sip!'—to lay him low with drunkenness—though he has already refused.
I will make him drunk to the point of stupor, though he refused
وَلَكِنand yet أُحَيّيهِI greet him وَأُكرِمُand I honor وَجهَهُhis face
وَأَصرِفُهاand I turn it away عَنهُfrom him وَأَسقيهِand I give him drink ماwhatever اِشتَهىhe desires
But I greet him and honor his countenance,
Rather I greet him warmly and honor his dignity
And turn it away from him, and give him whatever drink he desires.
And divert the cup from him and give him what he craved
وَلَيسَand is not إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle نامَhe sleeps عِندِwith me بِموقَظٍawakened
And when he sleeps beside me, he is not awakened,
And when he sleeps he is not awakened
Nor, when awake, does he hear anything hurtful.
Nor does he hear anything harmful
