وَلَمّاand when تَلاقَيناwe met وَجَدتُI found بَنانَهاher fingertips
مُخَضَّبَةًdyed تَحكيresembling عُصارَةَthe extract of عَندَمِʿandam (a red dye)
And when we met, I found her fingertips
Dyed, like the crimson extract of ʿandam.
فَقُلتُso I said خَضَبتِyou dyed الكَفَّthe palm بَعديafter me أَهَكَذاis this how?
يَكونُis جَزاءُthe recompense of المُستَهامِthe love-crazed one المُتَيَّمِthe love-enslaved one
So I said, “You dyed your palm after I left—is this how
A love-crazed, love-enslaved man is repaid?”
فَقالَتso she said وَأَلقَتand she cast فيinto الحَشاthe heart لاfirst fragment of لاعج: searing عِجَsecond fragment of لاعج: searing الجَوىlove’s anguish
مَقالَةَthe words of مَنone who بِالحُبِّof love لَمdid not يَتَبَرَّمِgrow weary
Then she spoke—casting love’s searing anguish into my heart—
The words of one who had not grown weary of love:
بَكَيتُI wept دَماًblood يَومَon the day of النَوىparting فَمَنَعتُهُso I held it back
بِكَفِّيَwith my palm فَاِحمَرَّتso turned red بَنانِيَmy fingertips مِنfrom دَمِblood
“I wept blood on the day of parting, and held it back
With my palm; so my fingertips reddened with blood.”
وَلَوand if قَبلَbefore مَبكاهاher weeping بَكَيتُI wept صَبابَةًardent longing
بِسُعدىfor Suʿdā شَفَيتُI healed النَفسَthe soul قَبلَbefore التَنَدُّمِregret
And had I, before her weeping, wept from longing
For Suʿdā, I would have healed my soul before regret.
وَلَكِنand yet بَكَتshe wept قَبليbefore me فَهَيَّجَso stirred لِيَfor me البُكىweeping
بُكاهاher weeping فَقُلتso I said الفَضلthe merit لِلمُتَقَدِّمِto the one who came first
And yet she wept before me; what moved me to weep
Was her weeping; so I said, “The merit belongs to whoever came first.”
