وَقَفتُI stood بِهِat it يَوماًone day إِلىuntil اللَيلِthe night حابِساlingering
A trace of Asma's dwelling has become effaced today.
For Asma a drawing I made today
I stood there one day, lingering until night.
And stood with it till night holding it tight
فَجِئناthen we came بِهيتٍto Hit لاnot نَرىwe see غَيرَother than مَنزِلٍa dwelling
قَليلٍscant بِهِin it الآثارُthe traces إِلّاexcept الرَوامِساthe trace-effacing winds
Then we came to Hit, seeing nothing but a dwelling,
We came upon a place where naught we see
With scant traces within it, save the winds that efface them.
Save scant remains and faded memories

They go about with me in the shade of every church;
They circle round each church’s shaded aisle
Then they—my people and my family—make me forget the churches.
My kin forget me—only churches smile
