هُوَhe اِبنيmy son وَأَمسىand has now become أَجرُهُhis reward لِيmine وَعَزَّنيand prevailed over me
عَلىover نَفسِهِhis soul رَبٌّa Lord إِلَيهِto him وَلاؤُهاits allegiance
He is my son; now the reward for him is mine, and I was overpowered
in my claim to his soul by a Lord to whom it owes allegiance.
جَهولٌfierce-tempered إِذاwhen جَهْلُfury العَشيرَةِthe tribe يُبتَغىis sought
حَليمٌforbearing وَيَرضىand approve حِلمَهُhis forbearance حُلَماؤُهاits forbearing men
Fierce when the tribe’s fury is called for,
forbearing, and its wise men approve his forbearance.
وَيَأمَنُand is safe from ذوone possessing حِلمِforbearance العَشيرَةِthe tribe جَهلَهُhis fury
عَلَيهِagainst him وَيَخشىand fear جَهلَهُhis fury جُهلاؤُهاits hotheads
And the tribe’s forbearing man is safe from his fury
against him, while its hotheads fear his fury.
