أَماnow وَإِلىand to الواشيthe talebearer وَإِنand even if طاوَعَتهُمُshe obeyed them
نُوارُNuwār وَسُدَّتand was barred بَينَناbetween us بِذَحولِby old grudges
Now, to the talebearer: even if they were obeyed
Even if she is compliant with the slanderer
By Nuwār, and the way between us was barred by old grudges,
The light between us is blocked by calamities
لَقَدindeed مَرَّpassed أَيّامٌdays وَلَوand even if شَحَطُremoteness النَوىseparation
بِفَرطِwith an excess of المُنىwishes أَعوَلتُI wailed كُلَّevery عَويلِwail
Days have indeed passed; though separation be distant,
Indeed days have passed, though the wailing of grief
In longing beyond measure, I have wailed every wail.
In excessive longing, I weep every wail
نَهاناhe forbade us فَلَمso we did not نَبِتspend the night أَبغَضتُI hated أَنto أَرىsee

He forbade us, so we did not stay the night; I hated to see myself
She prohibited us, yet we did not stop loving
Weak in strength, or following a substitute.
I hate to see one feeble or a follower of alteration
وَعَزَّيتُand I consoled نَفساًa soul عَنaway from نُوارٍNuwār جَليدَةًsteadfast
عَلىdespite ماwhat بِهاis within it مِنof لَوعَةٍanguish وَغَليلِand burning thirst
And I consoled my steadfast soul for parting from Nuwār,
I consoled a frigid soul
Despite the anguish and burning thirst within it.
From the anguish and agony within her
بَكَتit wept ماas long as بَكَتit wept شَجوَthe sorrow of البُكاweeping ثُمَّthen سامَحَتit yielded
لِإِقرارِto accepting هَجرٍestrangement مِنfrom نُوارِNuwār طَويلِlong
It wept and wept in the sorrow of tears, then yielded
She wept what she wept, the lamentation of weeping, then forgave
To accepting a long estrangement from Nuwār.
To acknowledge a long estrangement from Nawar
أَصُدُّكُماI shun you both صَدُّa turning away from الرِميِّstricken quarry تَطاوَلَتgrew long
بِهِover it عِدَّةُthe tally of الأَيّامِthe days وَهوَand it is قَتيلِslain
I turn from you both as from stricken quarry; long has grown
I block both of you, the blockage of shooting
The tally of days over it, while it lies slain.
The days have prolonged it and he is slain
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَداعيsurely invoking اللَهِGod فيat ساعَةِthe hour of الضُحىforenoon
عَلَيكِagainst you وَداعٍand invoking جُنحَat the onset of كُلِّevery أَصيلِlate afternoon
And I surely invoke God at the hour of forenoon
And I, at the time of morning prayer, call upon God
Against you, and invoke Him at the onset of every late afternoon,
With farewell on you, the wing of every noble one extends
وَمُحتَضِنٍand clasping رُكنَthe corner اليَمانيthe Yemeni وَمُشتَكٍand complaining
إِلىto الجانِبِthe side الغَربيِّwestern صَعدَthe rising of عَويليmy wailing
And clasp the Yemeni Corner, and voice my complaint
And one embracing the pillar of Yemen and complaining
To the western side in a rising wail.
To the west side, my wailing ascended
