Neither the longing of a highland-loving captive, maddened and sickened

by water and pasture in Wadi al-Shara and the Ghawr—

he yearned, when the fetter bit him and he grew heartsick,

for his pastures among rocky uplands and sandy slopes,

and sought with his eyes lofty mountains

    and places where one in fetters can see no hope;

whenever he sought a way toward them, his course was checked

by a stout-stranded tether that bit both forelegs painfully—

nor a mother's longing for her dark-fringed young, surrounded by

fruit-laden, towering arak trees at Dhu al-Ahna,

who went from him in the morning, shaking off the dew, after

she saw the sun's rim rise, then climb higher,

is greater than the longing for Rayya I felt

the morning parting's herald called and made himself heard.

Ah, my two companions, who urged each other

to reproach me unless I obey and listen:

stop and look—there must be one backward glance,

cast upcountry, where the people scattered and hurried away,

for one deprived, whose people have overruled his will,

who hides a tear in shame, lest it appear.

Grief and remembrance surge within him whenever

he sings or climbs a rise in the land.

And if you hope that love will fade

for certain, and that drink will quench and satisfy us,

then turn back the blowing wind, or change heartache

once it lodges in the breast's recesses and entrenches itself.

And when I saw al-Bishr had come between us,

and longing's daughters roamed, moaning and homesick,

I turned toward the encampment until I found myself

aching in neck and vein from craning toward it.

I find my eyelids, in the hollow of a ruined camp,

at Dhu al-Atf, about to grow hot and weep.

    وَقَلَّ لِنَجدٍ عِندَنا أَن تُوَدَّعا

    Stop, bid farewell to Najd and those dwelling in al-Hima;

a farewell alone is too little for Najd, in our eyes.

I shall praise Najd as it deserves.

Stop for us, riders of Najd—I said—and listen.

You longed for Rayya, though you yourself had set

your visiting-place far from Rayya, while your two clans were together.

It is not right to undertake a thing willingly

and then grieve if the herald of longing bids farewell.

The evenings of al-Hima will not return

to you; but let your eyes shed tears.

Was it for a dwelling at al-Raqashayn, fiercely swept

by summer winds, at their first coming and return,

that my left eye wept? When I rebuked it

for folly after self-restraint, both streamed together.

I remember the days of al-Hima, then bend

over my liver, fearing it might tear apart.

Ah, by God's majesty, if only you remembered me

as I remember you! I have not held back my eye's tears.

She said, “Yes, by God—a remembrance that, were it

poured on solid rock, would split the rock apart—

when I have broken with all my companions

for you, and devoted all my love to you,

and given you many times more, leaving within my breast

    great afflictions, new and returning.

I paid you love's due; yet you thought me

like a doubter whom doubt drew on to give still more.”

When we exchanged fragments of her talk

hurriedly, her gaze softened and gave me hope,

after estrangement, in an hour alone

away from people, fearing those unseen might look in,

I revived at words that almost healed love's pain,

our livers nearly tearing apart at them,

as a thirsty man wrests water from a raincloud's pools,

its heaped clouds departing once he had slaked his thirst.

I seek refuge in your two noble hills, lest

an envier find an opening against us in what remains of our union,

and lest you mix into the sweet drink between us

a tainted draught of unwelcome murk.

I disdain what can be reached without danger,

and crave the drink kept guarded and beyond reach.
