وَيَومٍAnd a day كَظِلِّlike the shadow of الرُمحِthe spear قَصَّرَshortened طولَهُits length
وَيَومٍ كَظِلِّ الرُمحِ قَصَّرَ طولَهُ
دَمُthe blood of الزِقِّthe wineskin عَنّاfor us وَاِصطِفاقُand the strumming of المَزاهِرِthe lutes
دَمُ الزِقِّ عَنّا وَاِصطِفاقُ المَزاهِرِ
And a day like a spear’s shadow—its length was shortened
for us by the wineskin’s blood and the strumming of lutes.
كَأَنَّas though أَباريقَthe ewers of الشُمولِthe wine عَشيَّةًat evening
كَأَنَّ أَباريقَ الشُمولِ عَشيَّةً
إِوَزَّgeese بِأَعلىin the upper part of الطَفِّal-Taff عوجُcurved المَناقِرِthe beaks
إِوَزَّ بِأَعلى الطَفِّ عوجُ المَناقِرِ
As though the wine ewers at evening
were geese in upper al-Taff, with curved beaks.
