أَياAh! حَزَناًsorrow! وعاوَدَنيand returned to me وداعيmy farewell
وكانَand was فراقَparting from لُبنَىLubna كالخُداعِlike deception
Ah, what sorrow! My farewell has returned to me.
Oh sorrow, you have returned to bid me farewell
And parting from Lubna was like a deception.
As though parting from Lubna was but a deceit
تكنَّفنيhemmed me in الوشاةُthe slanderers فَأَزعَجُونيso they drove me away
فَيَاso, O! لِلّهGod, for help! لِلوَاشيagainst the slanderer المُطاعِwho is obeyed
The slanderers hemmed me in and drove me away.
The slanderers besieged me, disquieting me
So, God help me against the slanderer whose words are heeded!
Oh Lord, cursed be the obeyed talebearer
فأَصبحتُso I became الغَداةَthat morning أَلُومُI blame نَفسيmyself
عَلَىfor شَيءٍsomething وَلَيسَand it was not بِمُستَطَاعِwithin one's power
So that morning I was blaming myself
I awoke in the morning, blaming myself
For something that lay beyond my power,
For something beyond my power
كَمَغبُونٍlike a cheated man يَعَضُّhe bites عَلَىon يَدَيهِhis two hands
تَبيَّنَhe discovered غَبنَهُhis loss بَعدَafter البيَاعِthe sale
Like a cheated man biting both his hands,
Like a duped man biting his hands
Who discovered his loss after the sale.
Realizing his loss after the sale
