أُحِبُّكَI love you أَطرافَat the ends of النَهارِthe day بَشاشَةًwith gladness
وَبِاللَيلِand at night يَدعونيcalls me الهَوىpassion فَأُجيبُso I answer
I love you gladly at either end of the day;
and at night passion calls me, so I answer.
لَئِنif indeed أَصبَحَتhas become ريحُthe wind of المَوَدَّةِaffection بَينَناbetween us
شَمالاًa north wind لَقَدlong ago (with ما) ماemphatic particle كُنتُI was وَهِيَwhile it was جُنوبُa south wind
If the wind of affection between us has become
a north wind, long ago I loved you when it was a south wind.
