سَخَطتَyou were angry وَلَمand did not أُذنِبI do wrong وَتَرضىand you favor مُخالِفاًone who defies you
كَأَنّيas though I were أَخوa bearer of ذَنبٍguilt فَفِعلُكَso your conduct مُعجِبُastonishing
You were angry, though I did no wrong, yet you favor one who defies you.
As though I were guilty—your conduct is astonishing.
فَلَوso if زُرتَyou visited مَلكاًa king كُنتَyou would be غَيرَnot مُخاطِرٍtaking a risk
وَإِنand although كُنتَyou are أَدنىnearer واصِلاًmaintaining ties وَأَقرَبُand closer
For if you visited a king, you would run no risk,
although you are nearer in friendship and closer.
وَلَوand if أَنَّنيthat I لَجَجتُI plunged deep فيin البَحرِthe sea عائِماًswimming
عَلىat خَطَرٍrisk فيin لُجَّةٍdeep water أَتَسَرَّبُI make my way through
And if I plunged into the sea, swimming,
in peril, making my way through the depths,
لَكُنتُthen I would be عَلىfor وُدّيكَyour love فيماin what تَسومُنيyou impose on me
مُخاطَرَةًin risk-taking فيamong الناسِpeople مِنthan ذَينِthese two أَعجَبُmore astonishing
I would, for your love, in what you impose on me,
be more astonishing in risk-taking among men than in these two ventures.
