My creditors ended my love for Asma, after

Their injustice and wickedness had worn me down.

    وَلَكِنَّ دينَ البَربَرِيِّ كَثيرُ

    So, had the debt to al-Barbari been small, I would have repaid it;

And yet the debt to al-Barbari is great.

And whenever the debts I owed them fell due,

I would draw in my wing away from them and fly off.

Each month I owe them a payment:

Eighty full-weight coins in cash, and a camel for slaughter.

We come to Thawr—so why should we depart?

And Thawr is patient with us throughout life.

I press hard upon Thawr; and Thawr, when he sees

That we are in need, is lavish in giving and generous.

So that is my habit as long as I live, and as long as there walks

A camel of Thawr's upon the back of the land.
