أَلاAh! أَيُّهاO البَيتُthe house الَّذيthat أَناI هاجِرُهam forsaking it
وَإِنّيand indeed I بِتِلماحٍwith a fleeting glance مِنَfrom الطَرفِthe eye ناظِرُهam looking at it
Ah, O house that I am forsaking,
O house which I am leaving as an emigrant,
Yet I watch it with a fleeting glance of the eye.
Though I glance at you with a fluttering eye.
لَهَنَّكَindeed you مِنas بَيتٍa house إِلَيَّto me لَمونِقٌtruly delightful
وَآنِقُand more delightful مِنfrom عَينيmy eye مِنَthan البَيتِthe house عامِرُهits dweller
You are indeed a delightful house to me,
You attract me like a sweetheart to her lover,
And to my eye, its dweller is more delightful than the house.
And the resident of an eye is drawn to you.
أَصُدُّI turn away حَياءًout of modesty أَنlest يَلِجَّgrow insistent بِهاfor her الهَوىpassion
وَأَنتِand you المُنىall I desire لَولاwere it not for عَدوٌّan enemy أُحاذِرُهI fear him
I turn away in modesty, lest passion for her grow insistent;
I restrain my love for fear it would betray me.
And you are all I long for, but for an enemy I fear.
You are my wish - if not for an enemy I dread.
وَفيكَand within you حَبيبُthe beloved النَفسِof the soul لَوif نَستَطيعُهُwe could reach her
لَماتَwould surely die الهَوىpassion وَالشَوقُand longing حينَwhen تُجاوِرُهyou dwell beside her
And within you is my soul's beloved; if we could reach her,
In you is the loved one of my soul if I could attain him.
Passion and longing would die when you dwelt beside her.
Then love and longing would die when neighbors.
فَإِنfor if يَكُنِit be that الأَعداءُthe enemies أَحمَواhave forbidden كَلامَهُher speech
عَلَيناto us فَلَمthen not تُحمَhas been withheld عَنّاfrom us مَناظِرُهthe sight of her
For if the enemies have forbidden speech with her
If enemies have protected their words from us,
To us, they have not kept the sight of her from us.
Their looks have not protected us.
أَتَهجُرُwill you forsake بَيتاًa house بِالحِجازِin the Hijaz تَلَعَّبَتtoyed
بِهِwith it الحَربُwar وَالأَعداءُand the enemies أَمor أَنتَyou زائِرُهvisiting it
Will you forsake a house in the Hijaz, toyed with
Shall I abandon a house in Hejaz toyed with
By war and enemies, or will you visit it?
By wars and enemies, or are you its visitor?
فَإِنfor if آتِهِI visit it لَمnot أَنجِI escape إِلّاexcept بِظَنِّهِunder his suspicion
وَإِنand if يَأتِهِhe visits it غَيريsomeone other than me تُنَطare pinned بيon me جَرائِرُهhis misdeeds
For if I visit it, I escape only under his suspicion;
If I come to it, I will attain only through its favor.
And if someone else visits it, his misdeeds are pinned on me.
If another comes to it, its perils will ensnare me.
